Laivakangas mine, Finland

Laivakangas is a gold mining area in the municipality of Raahe, Finland. Construction of the mine started in the spring of 2010. The Laivakangas deposit is one of the largest gold deposits ever in the Nordic countries and the production time for the known deposit is ten years. The mine will produce about 3,700 kilos of gold per year. The mine's history begins in the 1980s, when gold ore was found in the area. After that period the mine had a couple of owners. In the early 2000s the business came to the Swedish company Nordic Mines, which has commissioned the area environmental assessments. Impact on employment will be about 80 people directly. The mine's estimated operating time is over 10 years.

    Year of completion was 2011. Because the project scope was significantly extended, the installation time was put back to the autumn of 2011, when the weather also caused problems. However, the work was completed by the new system-specific deadlines set by the client.

     

    Facts about the facility

  • The main equipment and pipeline materials were supplied by Metso Minerals Ab, the main designer of the project. The pipework includes 12 kilometers of pre-insulated PE and steel pipes.
  • Thick-walled heavy rubber hoses in the size range of DN 50 to 450 were particularly challenging to install.
