Onnelanpolku sheltered housing, Lahti, Finland

Onnelanpolku sheltered housing centre provides long-term accommodation for elderly people. Residents can move into the building when they are still active seniors and go on living there, supported by the many services provided, even after their functional capacity becomes more limited with age. The building and its surroundings have supported this objective, and the residents are satisfied with the social nature of the facilities.” Sanna Mäkinen, Executive Director, Lahti Foundation of Housing and Services for the Elderly.

The Onnelanpolku sheltered housing facility is the first passive apartment building in Finland to be certified by the Passive House Institute

The challenge

To build an accessible, pleasant and energy-efficient living environment for the elderly. The aim is to reach a zero-energy level and ensure consistently high-quality living conditions in the building.

The solution

Onnelanpolku is the first large sheltered housing project with an energy solution based on diverse use of renewable energy, very good energy efficiency and effective utilisation of free and surplus energy. Electricity consumption is minimised through the use of energy-efficient ventilation equipment and pumps, efficient LED lights, and lighting for common areas based on presence/absence detectors and regulation depending on the amount of natural light. Onnelanpolku has been linked to Caverion’s facility control room.

Although the service concept was challenging, high-quality design and careful execution made implementation possible. Good structural design has enabled a small external wall surface area and a cosy atrium courtyard, which serves as an “energy accumulator” for the building.

Lifespan

Construction began in 2013, and the building was taken into use in 2014.
