Stora Enso, Finland

Stora Enso's Sunila pulp mill is located in Kotka, Finland. It has the capacity to produce 375,000 tons of pulp annually. The mill has around 200 employees. The Sunila mill produces bleached softwood pulp, which is mainly used to make printing paper and soft paper.

Stora Enso is a provider of renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wood and paper on global markets. The company's aim is to replace non-renewable materials by innovating and developing new products and services based on wood and other renewable materials. 

Stora Enso focuses on fibre-based packaging, plantation-based pulp, biomaterial innovations and sustainable construction solutions. Stora Enso offers an environmentally friendly alternative and a smaller carbon footprint in comparison with many competing products that are made from non-renewable materials.

Challenges

  • A pulp mill began using a new process and making a new product, giving rise to new challenges for the way the mill operated.
  • While the project was being executed, some necessary changes were identified. Due to these and to the new process, the project timetable was demanding.
  • Solutions

  • Caverion was responsible for ensuring that the installation of electrical automation equipment went smoothly with regard to materials and installation work. As regards electric tracing, we were also responsible for design.
  • Caverion carried out process electrification, instrumentation, electric tracing and building electrification at the mill. It also took commissioning measurements related to these installations.
  • The contract was made in two separate parts: trunk cabling related to the change in control systems and the actual installation of the electrical automation equipment for the process.
  • The scope of the work increased considerably as additional requirements were identified during the process design and execution phase. It was deemed necessary to supplement the automation and to improve safety-related operations.
